I was in the hotel every night with them, going out to clubs, going out to eat. I kind of became the fifth Beatle for a couple of weeks. It was through that I got to meet the Beatles playing at the Olympia Theatre in Paris we were on the same bill. Sylvie and her brother, who was her bandleader, spotted me and said, "We love the way you play. I just happened to walk into this very minuscule film part, playing in a band in a musical movie. I was 19 and a young, starving Englishman in Paris. How did you end up working with Sylvie Vartan in the '60s?Ī. I never use that word but it was awesome. It was way beyond what I was expecting, it was almost a religious experience. Did you hang around to watch their set at the tribute show?Ī. Are you secretly rooting against a Led Zeppelin reunion tour so you won't have to loan Jason out again?Ī. So it's a whole new experience to deal with writing songs being completely sober and lucid. There's been the divorce, and I decided to clean my act up, as it were. When Lou and I split up for the final time in 2002, I didn't do very much for a couple of years, and I had some changes in my life. It must be reassuring to know that you still have, pardon me, a jones for songwriting?Ī. We're looking to have it come out next spring. It really is a new beginning, and now we're embarked on doing a whole new album. As far as original songs are concerned, yes, it is. Is this Kelly's debut as Foreigner's lead singer on record?Ī. And we have a brand new song called "Too Late." There are also two live tracks, "Starrider" and "Juke Box Hero" with a little piece of "Whole Lotta Love" thrown in as a little tribute to Jason's father. This one is essentially made up of songs that hit the Top 30 over the past 30 years.

How is "No End in Sight" different from the numerous Foreigner retrospectives that preceded it?Ī. We caught up with Jones for a quick chat.

(Foreigner's latest drummer, Jason Bonham, pulled double duty sitting in for his dad, original Zep kit man John.) Tonight, the guitarist-keyboardist brings the reconstituted lineup of Foreigner - with Kelly Hansen replacing original vocalist Lou Gramm - to Worcester in support of "No End in Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner" out July 15. Tunes like "Urgent," "I Want to Know What Love Is," and "Hot Blooded" got a workout when the band played the recent tribute to Atlantic Records cofounder Ahmet Ertegun, which grabbed headlines for the reunion of old pals Led Zeppelin. But Mick Jones, 63, is best known for writing the songs that make Foreigner fans sing. He's produced hit albums for Van Halen ("5150") and Billy Joel ("Storm Front"), played backup to '60s French chanteuse Sylvie Vartan, and is stepdad to buzzed-about DJs Samantha and Mark Ronson.
